As an American Israeli who grew up with a father in the jewelry business, when I set out to find an engagement ring for my to-be fiancée (now wife), I anticipated a few things: I would not find a high-quality ring or diamond in my price range, the price would be absurdly inflated, and I would have המשך no help from the merchant. Sadly I have found that low quality, high prices, unrefined taste, and awful customer service typify Israeli sales. In this context, the quality I found at Doron Merav was not only world-class; in Israel it is singular. Even my jewelry-salesman father thinks that the engagement and wedding rings Doron crafted for my wife are exceptionally beautiful. Though I eventually settled on a diamond, I discovered Doron Merav's website when I searched for Israeli jewelers offering Moissanite. (For anyone interested in that stone, know that Doron Merav is one of the few in Israel that offers it.) The elegance of the site immediately suggested that these guys were professional and cared about beauty. I emailed Doron and was redirected to Eran, who promptly answered my inquiries and invited me to visit the studio. He was flexible about the time, willing to meet me a bit earlier and later than his office hours. I went in tentatively, expecting to be worked: surely I would be perceived as a) loaded and b) naive. The limitation of my Hebrew (which is pretty good) would surely make it harder to stand my ground. But Eran is as welcoming as he is professional. He was happy to switch to English. He took time to show me the variety of Moissanite stones and diamonds they offered, as well as their engagement ring line. He explained the four Cs and qualities of the metals, all of which was consistent with my father's overview. When I decided to walk away to consider their offering, still thinking in terms of Moissanite, Eran didn't pressure me at all to hurry. What followed was another couple of visits and a 45-letter email exchange. Eran answered every inquiry quickly and fully, with no sign of games. I was thorough in investigating what I would be receiving. I was also demanding: I requested that they somehow tweak the design so that my fiancée's ring would be unique, I wanted GIA certification, and I needed the ring expedited. Eran and Doron were willing to grant all three requests. They suggested adding a couple of small diamonds (berries) that would suit the style of the ring. As a result, although the center stone is small, with the complementary diamonds the ring sparkles beyond my understanding; Doron is that good. They were willing to get GIA certification, but it wouldn't be able to meet the expedited date, so I opted for IGL. And they had the ring ready for me on time. I should add that in the course of interacting with Eran, I asked my then-girlfriend to go to their studios just to give me an impression of what she liked. (To my surprise, it turned out that her closest friend at work had purchased her engagement ring from Doron Merav's Etsy page, so this friend accompanied my then-girlfriend.) She opted for a small stone, though I hadn't given her a budget or any sort of limit. Eran never pushed her or me to opt for a larger stone. The final price was far less than I anticipated, but still enough to know that I bought a valuable piece of craftsmanship. In a rush to propose on a particular day but needing to stay at work until late, Eran had me come by his home on my way out. He greeted me with the ring, stowed away in an original crate-styled box in a white holder in a classy handled bag. He showed me the ring and the certification, pointing out all I needed to know about it. To sum up, I couldn't have asked for a better experience with my jeweler. These guys are professional, patient, quick, and personal. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Doron Merav; in fact I'd urge it. A year after proposing, my wife still remarks to me that she has the most beautiful ring in the world, staring at it and glowing over its glittering perfection. Needless to say we returned to Doron Merav for our wedding rings, which are unsurprisingly phenomenal. Also needless to say, I plan to return to Doron Merav for future jewelry needs.
